Creating a News-Intro Part 1

In this tutorial we'll show you, how to create a news intro with Sony Vegas and two animations from our website. Here is a small preview-video of what we are going to create:

Creating a News-Intro Part 1 - The Background

Step 1

At first download background loop 140 (link) and the blue globe motion element (link) from our website.

Step 2

Start Sony Vegas and create a new project (PROJECT -> NEW). In the "Video"-field choose "match media settings" and select the downloaded background loop 140 from your hard drive. Sony Vegas will create a project with NTSC-widescreen settings (864x486 / 29,97 fps).

Step 3

Import loop 140 into your project (PROJECT -> IMPORT) and drag it from the project window (1) to the timeline on the video track (2). Now grab the right end of the loop and drag it to the right side until it reaches  timecode position 00:00:30:

Note: If your timecode doesn't show seconds and frames, you should set it to "Time & Frames". To do that, simply right-click the empty space (1) and select "TIME FORMAT -> TIME & FRAMES":

Step 4

Drag the loop again from the project window to the timeline on the video track above the first loop (1). Set the duration of this second loop to 30 seconds, so that both animations have the same length:

Select the upper animation in the timeline, right-click (1) and select "VIDEO EVENT FX". From the pop-up window select "COLOR BALANCE" and enter the following values (2): RED:0,4825  GREEN: 0,0340 and BLUE: -0,4095. Now the preview window should show a nice orange version of our loop (3):

Step 6

Select the upper loop again, right-click and select "VIDEO EVENT FX". Now select "COOKIE CUTTER" from the effects menu and enter the values (1) shown in the next image. This adds a smooth transition between both loops (2):

Step 7

Let's add some text scrolling along the background: Right-click the empty video track above the two loops and select "INSERT TEXT MEDIA". Enter a short text-term for example "+++ NEWS " and repeat it for at least 25 times (1). Enter all the settings like shown in the following image and hit the tiny clock-icon (2) to animate the textline:

Step 8

After clicking the clock-icon of the location-settings, a timeline will appear with a keyframe on position 00:00:00. Drag the timeline-slider to the end of the text-animation (00:00:30) (1) and change the first parameter of the location-setting from 0,00 to 1,00 (2):

Now let's create a second text-scroller. Therefore we need an additional video track. Select "INSERT -> VIDEO TRACK" (1) to create a new track (2):

Right-click the empty track and create another text-line exactly like shown in Step 7 and 8. Make this second text a little bit taller (1). This time the first location-setting starts with "1,00" (2) and will be animated to "0,00". So the text will move the opposite direction:

Click the clock-icon of the location-setting, move the timeline-slider to 00:00:30 (1) and change the location-setting from "1,00" to "0,00":

Now adjust the opacity-setting of both text-animations. To do that, point the cursor at the top of a text animation until the cursor morphs to a hand-symbol. Now hold down the left mouse key and drag the opacity-line down until a setting of 20-30%.

The preview window should show something like this:

Step 13

Select "PROJECT -> RENDER AS" to create a Quicktime file. Select a folder and a name in the output-settings. Click on Quicktime and select the "Movietools - NTSC No Compression" template (1). If you don't created the Movietools Render-Templates for Sony Vegas before, please read here (link). Click on "Render" to create the movie.
